The merger of Nearby Share and Quick Share has brought a new feature to transfer files on Android in a simpler way.
During CES in Las Vegas, Google announced the integration of Nearby Share with Samsung’s Quick Share, with the aim of improving the file transfer system between Android devices.
This will mean that, from now on, the tool will be called Quick Share on all devices with Google’s operating system, regardless of whether they are Samsung or not. It will also combine both technologies to improve the sending of images or videos. In fact, and thanks to this merger, Google has activated a new feature that should have been in Nearby Share from the beginning.
As revealed by the SamMobile portal, Google is activating the possibility of transferring files between Android devices using a QR code, a feature that, until now, was only available on Samsung smartphones through Quick Share. This feature is an alternative to wireless file sending.
This is how Google and Samsung QR file transfer works
That is, when the “nearby devices” option does not work properly or for any reason does not detect a nearby smartphone, users will be able to activate another option called “Use QR code.”.
The smartphone will automatically create a QR code that the recipient must scan through their mobile phone camera to receive the file transfer on Android. The feature is also especially useful if a user doesn’t have the recipient in their contact list or simply doesn’t want to activate the option that makes their device visible to everyone.
The feature is already available to some users with Android phones that are not Samsung through version 24.49.33 of Google Play services.
Samsung, however, maintains some additional Android file transfer options that are unique despite Quick Share’s integration with Nearby Share. One of them is the possibility of downloading documents, images, or videos through a link. In addition, One UI 7, the new version of Samsung’s customization layer, allows files to be transferred even when there are no devices nearby. To do this, you will use the Internet connection of both smartphones.
In any case, the possibility of transferring files via QR is an additional advantage to AirDrop, Apple’s service, which does not offer this option.
