Simple Steps to Set Up a Family Phone

Learn how to set up a family phone easily with these simple steps, including parental controls, user profiles, and safety features.

If your phone is used by multiple family members, the best thing you can do is create different users, regardless of whether you’re using an iPhone or an Android phone. As a last option, you could also use a dual SIM, which will allow you to separate phone numbers on the same device.

If you want to share your phone with other people without compromising your apps or personal data, there are different alternatives you can opt for, whether you are an iOS or Android user.

However, there are some other differences between these operating systems, since, for example, the iPhone has preferred not to add a physical space for the SIM and has chosen the eSIM for its models, while Android manufacturers continue to bet on a physical dual SIM.

In any case, there are other options available if you don’t want to have 2 SIM cards in the same mobile, which would imply having 2 phone numbers in the same place, which is perfect if you use the terminal for personal and professional matters.

These are all the options available so that several people can use a mobile phone without putting the data of other users at risk:

Simple Steps to Set Up a Family Phone

Add users on Android

If there’s one thing that characterizes Android, it’s the wide variety of tools available in its different layers, although sometimes they can go somewhat unnoticed, as is the case with the creation of multiple users.

Unlike the Dual SIM, with this functionality, different users that you have created will be able to access it, whether they are children’s profiles or other people in the household, in the same way that computers allow when you turn on the device.

This alternative is vital if you have minor children and you don’t want them to access your WhatsApp messages, images and videos, applications, or sensitive sections that should not be within reach of children.

To create different users on an Android phone, the procedure is as follows:

Go to Device Settings and select System and Multiple Users. If you can’t find this menu, search directly from the Settings app for the term “users.”

Choose Add user and tap OK. If you can’t find this option, it means that your phone doesn’t accept the creation of different users, so it’s best to opt for a dual SIM.

Create the user’s name and configure it to your liking, with the option of Configure now, if the person who is going to use it is with you, or Not now, which will allow you to configure the device when the user in question meets you, since they will have to log in to their Google account.

Create temporary users

Create temporary users

If you just want to share your phone so that someone can test it during a specific time or simply so that they can access the applications and services available temporarily, it is best to choose this option.

To do this, you have to follow the same steps as when creating multiple users in the system, but you’ll have to select an option that appears a little further down, called Add guest.

From this section, you can quickly switch to this temporary profile, as well as choose which apps and services will be available to you, without it intruding on the owner’s account or others.

Create a family group on iPhone

Apple has called this feature Family Sharing, and it will allow you to add or remove different members, including minors, so that you can control the use of the iPhone at all times—also available on iPad.

In this case, if you are the parent, you will have the option to activate the purchase function, which will be made from your active payment method, only if you want other people in the family to be able to buy with your data.

To create different users on iPhone, follow these steps:

  • Go to the Settings app and tap on your Apple Account profile.
  • Once inside, choose the Family option and follow the on-screen instructions.
  • To choose members you want to add, you’ll need to select the Add Member option, as long as they have an Apple account.

Finally, set permissions for each member, which you can do from another Apple device—on iPhone, with iOS 16 and later—in addition to creating a child account.

Choosing a mobile phone with dual SIM

Choosing a mobile phone with dual SIM

Regardless of whether there is a slot on your mobile to add 2 physical SIM cards or whether this option is complemented with an eSIM, as is the case with some of the most advanced mobiles on the market, it is a great alternative to separating the personal from the professional.

In this case, you could choose SIM 1 for the working day and access SIM 2 at the end of the working day. Although I have to warn you that these phone numbers will not work at the same time on some devices, this being their main drawback.

In any case, it is a good method in several scenarios, such as trips abroad—outside the European Union, if you are a resident—or the possibility of separating personal and professional life, as I have already mentioned.

To activate this feature, you will simply have to access the Mobile Networks menu in Settings. The SIM cards you have inserted will appear here, in addition to the eSIM if you have scanned the QR code.

In short, the Dual SIM will allow you to clearly separate both phone numbers, something that is not available in the creation of multiple users.
