Samsung may be reconsidering software updates for older Galaxy Watches. Discover which models could lose major OS upgrades and what owners should know.

Samsung could leave its older Galaxy Watch without updates. A leak claims that the South Korean company is considering not releasing any more system updates for older smartwatches, depriving them of new features. Support for older Galaxy Watches would be limited to security patches, just like mobile phones.

The information comes from the well-known leaker kro_roe, who assures that Samsung will no longer release new versions of Wear OS and One UI Watch for old watches. The report does not mention which models would fall into this category or what the reasons for the decision would be. The move is likely to affect the Galaxy Watch 4 and 5, which are about to reach the number of updates promised by the manufacturer.

That a device runs out of support is not news. Samsung and other companies offer a few years of operating system updates and security patches. Once the useful life is up, these devices no longer receive new features or bug fixes. Although the watches will not stop working, users will no longer be able to take advantage of the latest features of the operating system.

Galaxy Watch 4 and 5 would run out of updates soon

The main candidates that fit into this scenario are the Galaxy Watch 4 and Galaxy Watch 5, which have already reached the end of the road. The Watch 4 has already received the four known operating system updates, so it fulfills Samsung’s support commitment. In the case of the Galaxy Watch 5, the watch is on the list of devices compatible with One UI 9 Watch, which would be the last version before being discontinued.

If confirmed by the manufacturer, these watches would not be immediately abandoned. Those who have a Galaxy Watch 4 or Galaxy Watch 5 will be able to use them without any problems, as the devices will go into the maintenance phase. The only downloads available from this point on will be updates to fix vulnerabilities or improve system stability.

The situation will be different for more recent generations such as the Galaxy Watch 8 or the first Ultra model, as these are still guaranteed more support cycles. In the case of the newly released Galaxy Watch 9 and Galaxy Watch Ultra 2, Samsung launched a more ambitious program that offers up to five system updates and five years of security patches.

With the end of support for old models, users could look for alternatives. The most obvious would be to buy a newer watch, but if yours runs smoothly and you don’t have any money, maybe there’s a trick to extend the support even further. Many users are using AI to remove features or bring back support to Samsung devices, regardless of what the brand has planned.
