When we think of smart speakers, the Amazon Echo inevitably comes to mind. They are, without a doubt, one of the best options for those looking to automate their home, as the catalog of these devices is much more extensive than any other brand, including simple and economical models, such as the Echo Pop, or more powerful options (see the recently announced Echo Studio of 2025). Now, Amazon has opted for a new competitor for the HomePod mini or Google’s Nest Audio. It’s called the Echo Dot Max.
This device arrives to replace the standard Amazon Echo after five generations. Now, in fact, in Amazon’s speaker catalog we find the Echo Pop, perfect for small spaces (such as the bathroom or a secondary room); the Echo Dot, the brand’s best-selling, which can be ideal for bedrooms, the kitchen, or small living rooms; the Echo Spot, designed specifically for the bedside table; and the Echo Studio, designed for sound lovers and for larger rooms, such as a living room or a large kitchen.
The Echo Dot Max sits between the Echo Dot and the Echo Studio, and, as new features beyond its new name, it incorporates a renewed design, better sound than the Echo Dot (although not as powerful as the Echo Studio), and an integrated hub. We could say that the Echo Dot Max is an alternative for those who are looking for good sound for the living room, kitchen, or master bedroom and who also value the design and home automation functions but who neither need the power of the Studio nor want to spend what it costs.
This is precisely something that is also covered by the HomePod mini ($99), one of its main competitors and of which I have been a user for more than five years. It’s compact, with a good design and powerful sound, and although it has its pros and cons, no smart speaker has caught my attention as much as Apple’s. Now, after testing the Amazon Echo Dot for 20 days and also knowing in detail everything it brings, I am clear which of the two is not going to plug back into my house.

The Amazon Echo is finally beautiful
The new Echo Dot Max arrives with very obvious changes, and one of them is, of course, its design. The company has opted for a much more modern and minimalist aesthetic. And yes, much more beautiful. In fact, it is the first Amazon speaker that convinces me with its design, because until now they all had a somewhat outdated look and, in my opinion, were not at all attractive to leave in sight in any room.
This model maintains the rounded shape, but now the button panel is located at the front, in a much more visible circular slit that we can easily access, even without having to look where we touch. The buttons are large and have a small texture that helps to locate them easily, although I have to admit that the matte finish is a magnet for fingerprints and sweat from your fingers.

Alexa speaker with room-filling sound and built-in smart home hub, with Alexa+ Early Access.
The slit is surrounded by a ring of light that is activated when we summon Alexa, and that lights up in different shades depending on the warning. The rest of the speaker is covered by a 3D knitted mesh, much softer to the touch and somewhat reminiscent of that of the HomePod mini. In any case, it is a design that looks good practically anywhere and that does not clash at all (as long as you opt for the black or white color, and not the purple that Amazon also sells on its website).
By the way, the Echo Dot Max looks pretty much the same as the Echo Dot Studio, but with one key difference: the Studio model is 40% larger, reaching 14.2 cm tall compared to this Dot Max’s 10.08 centimeters.

The sound of the Amazon Echo Dot Max
Let’s get to the really important thing: how does the Echo Dot Max sound? Amazon has updated the speakers to bet on a sound system that offers different advantages over the Echo Dot, including richer bass and clearer vocals thanks to a new 0.8-inch tweeter and a 2.75-inch woofer.
The sound of the Echo Dot Max is quite clear, with good bass and a very good calibration between the treble and midtones. It sounds good in any type of genre, including those that are somewhat more complex or in which there are a large number of instruments. Amazon has also included in this Echo Dot Max a space-adaptation technology that is capable of distributing sound evenly depending on the position of the device, as well as the dimensions of the room. It works well, and in practically any room you can get a very good sound.
Just don’t expect exceptional sound quality; in fact, in very large environments, such as a large living room, or even very open ones, it loses some strength, but placing it in a bedroom, a small living room, or even in the kitchen, you will have a very good sound experience. On the other hand, the Echo Dot Max also supports stereo sound by pairing another device and features Bluetooth to connect external devices, such as a phone. I myself have been able to connect my turntable.

Alexa has its pros and cons
The Amazon Echo Dot Max also has a four-speaker system to summon Alexa. They have a fairly wide range, also when the speaker is playing music, and listen even without the need to shout or project the voice directly to the device.
Alexa, by the way, works great on this Echo Dot Max. It is able to give clear answers and perform actions quickly thanks to an AZ3 chip. It also has those little extras that can be very useful when interacting with the assistant, such as the possibility of talking to them in a whisper and having them respond in the same way.
The Echo Dot Max, on the other hand, supports Alexa+, Amazon’s AI-powered assistant, so the moment this feature is available beyond the United States, the device will be updated to include this feature for better control of the smart home.
And speaking of the connected home, the Echo Dot Max integrates a hub to connect smart devices compatible with Zigbee, Matter, and Thread directly from the speaker and control them even from the Alexa app.
Of course, the app is a bit of a mess, with too many options and menus that are often difficult to access. It is probably the most negative point of using this Echo Dot Max, and the fact of absolutely everything, even connecting devices via Bluetooth, is saved, I do it with my voice.

Is the Amazon Echo Dot Max worth it?
The Echo Dot Max for $89, is a round product, and not just literally. It has very good sound quality for its price, a design that is not going to displease anyone, and very good features for the smart home. It is undoubtedly an option to consider, whether you are just starting out in home automation or already have a smart home, and you want a speaker that also offers good sound to cover medium-sized spaces, such as a living room or kitchen, or even in the bedroom.
I have to confess that the sound quality, although magnificent, is a step behind that of my HomePod mini. However, the Echo Dot Max has completely replaced it for a couple of reasons. Alexa works great, much better than Siri. It’s a pleasure to ask you to turn off the lights or to put on music and have you do it the first time, without complaints. In addition, it has those little extras that Apple does not include and that can be very useful in many cases, including the possibility of connecting devices via Bluetooth. In my opinion, it’s more worth sacrificing that little extra in sound quality from the Apple speaker for the advantages of the Echo Dot Max.
