Explore the next-gen chip and optimizations that make the Fire TV Stick 4K Select the fastest streaming stick available.
A few days ago, Amazon presented its new Fire TV Stick 4K Select, the media player that aims to become a bestseller. One of the features that caught the attention of many was its performance and catalog. Although it is launched with a new operating system (Vega OS), all popular apps will be available from the beginning thanks to a trick.
According to The Verge, the Fire TV Stick 4K Select doesn’t run native apps, at least during its launch. To ensure that the new player has access to Netflix, Disney+, HBO, and all popular apps from day one, Amazon will stream Android versions of those apps from the cloud.
This is done from containers that act as launchers for applications hosted on Amazon’s servers. When you go to the Fire TV store and hit the “download” button, you won’t install a native app on your device, but a shortcut to the original file in the cloud.
When you run Netflix, for example, it will start a streaming session from AWS servers, showing the app as if it were installed on your device. This trick would be similar to running a game on Xbox Cloud or Luna, with the difference that streaming video applications consume fewer resources.

All popular apps will be compatible with Fire TV Stick 4K Select
Amazon doesn’t want to risk launching a product with an empty store because of Vega OS. The company will offer developers free streaming for 9 months while they develop native versions for their new operating system. Apps could use cloud streaming after this period, although an additional fee would be charged.

“Amazon’s cloud app streaming enables the deployment of existing Fire TV apps to customers on Vega OS Fire TV devices,” the company said in a developer filing. “If your app runs on a Fire TV Stick 4K Max and meets the prerequisites, it can run on a Vega OS Fire TV device using cloud app streaming.”
The document mentions that the user experience will not change for consumers. Apps that run by streaming will offer the same features as the native versions found on other Fire TV Sticks. The only difference is that they’ll display the label “Amazon Cloud Hosted App” in the Fire TV store.
Amazon confirmed that it will enable cloud streaming by default for the most popular apps that meet certain requirements. For example, if it’s compatible with Fire OS 7, runs on the Fire TV Stick 4K Max, or is already published. The company has the final say on which apps use this feature but made it clear that it won’t apply to games or utilities.
