Battlefield 6 features a new destruction and physics system that is the most advanced we’ve seen to date in a next-gen game. I’ve been able to try it out, and I can assure you that it’s really spectacular, but how did we go from the limitations of Battlefield 2042 to the wonders of Battlefield 6?
The technical director of the game, Christian Buhl, has explained where the “miracle” that has made this great change possible comes from, and the answer is something that I have been telling you for years: the abandonment of Xbox One and PS4, the consoles of the previous generation.

According to Buhl, not having to launch the game on Xbox One and PS4 allowed them to start from a new technical base at the hardware level, marked by Xbox Series S, a console that has more memory available, has a much more powerful CPU, and also uses a much faster storage unit and a more advanced GPU.
By having more resources and more power, they were able to implement that new physics system and that new destruction system. Both would have been impossible if they had again had to start from the technical limitations of Xbox One and PS4.
Buhl has also said that the Frostbite Engine is a very advanced graphics engine that is designed specifically for the Battlefield franchise, and that it was another of the central pillars that made it possible to implement that advanced destruction system while also maintaining a good level of performance.

Buhl’s words confirm that the development of Battlefield 2042 was hampered by having to support the previous generation of consoles and imply that if this game had been developed as an exclusive for PC and for Xbox Series S-Series X and PS5, the result would have been much better.
I remember that my first impression when trying Battlefield 2042 was quite negative, both in terms of graphics and poor optimization. It was so poorly made that it suffered from a huge CPU bottleneck, something that was an inherent problem with the game itself, because it occurred regardless of the processor we were using.
The long life cycle that the previous generation consoles have had has hindered the development of many games and has had a very negative impact on many titles. One of the best examples is Resident Evil 4 Remake, which was also released for PS4, and which could have been much better technically if it had not been developed on the basis of that console.
