Microsoft and Meta have teamed up to launch the new Xbox Meta Quest 3S Edition, a special (and very limited) version of the virtual reality headset.
Microsoft has taken its plan to make every device at its fingertips an Xbox very seriously. And not only from the merely playable but also in the aesthetic and visual section. Following what has been seen in the segment of portable consoles with the Asus ROG Xbox Ally, the Redmond company has adopted a similar approach in the field of virtual reality with the release of the Meta Quest 3S Xbox Edition.
It is a special version of the Meta Quest 3S, the virtual and augmented reality headset that Mark Zuckerberg’s company presented last year. It stands out for adopting the aesthetics of the Xbox Series X, in black and with green details, and for incorporating some additional benefits.
Technically, the Meta Quest 3S Xbox Edition does not undergo modifications from the original model beyond its appearance. The headset incorporates the Xbox logo on its sides and, as previously indicated, adopts the black and green colors characteristic of the Microsoft platform. This not only applies to the viewfinder but also to the Touch Plus controllers.
But the story does not end there. The Meta Quest 3S Xbox Edition also includes a limited-edition, matching Xbox Wireless Controller. It also comes with an Elite fastening strap. In terms of services, the device offers three months of Xbox Game Pass Ultimate and Horizon+ at no additional cost.
New Meta Quest 3S Xbox Edition: custom design and little else
It is striking that Microsoft, a pioneering company in the field of virtual reality with HoloLens, has fallen to Meta to develop an Xbox headset. It is true that the developments of the Redmond firm have focused mainly on the business segment and have not achieved a great reach to the common public.
Zuckerberg’s team, meanwhile, has managed to earn a space within the consumer field thanks to its high-quality devices and low prices. It is true that they have not been enough to promote the vision of the metaverse, but the Meta Quest headset has earned a place of recognition in a market that is still nascent.
The Meta Quest 3S Xbox Edition is offered with 128GB of internal storage. This is the variant with the smallest space in the headset, considering that the conventional model is also offered in 256 GB. In any case, considering that the focus is on taking advantage of cloud gaming with Xbox Cloud Gaming (available in Game Pass Ultimate), it is surely more than enough.
The bad news is that buyers will have to shell out more money to keep this gadget. The price of the Meta Quest 3S Xbox Edition is $399.99, when the conventional 128GB variant costs $299.99. It’s clear that buyers will be paying extra for the Xbox restyling and controller and not for a new experience. After all, for $399.99 you can also get the regular 256GB Quest 3S.
If you really want to get your hands on the Meta Quest 3S Xbox Edition, don’t waste your time. Microsoft indicates that the headset will be available both on Meta’s official store and on some authorized sellers in the US and the UK in “extremely limited” quantities.
