The Watchers
After taking a road trip through an old forest in Ireland, a young woman ends up lost in the middle of nowhere. It is then that he meets a series of disturbing characters who live in a kind of bunker. However, the problem seems not to be them, but the strange threat that lurks at night among the trees.
Perhaps The Watchers is not a horror film for all tastes, but it is undoubtedly full of suspense and has a quite original story, as far as it goes. You can watch it on Max, as it’s part of their catalog.
The uncle’s inheritance
At first glance, the plot might seem terribly cliché: an old millionaire, relatives who come to his mansion with more interest in his money than in himself, and suddenly an unexpected murder. All very Agatha Christie novel, right?
However, this Polish film that can be seen on Netflix is quite original, mixing classic suspense, comedy, and the occasional more or less unexpected twist. It’s not that it reinvents mystery cinema, but it has its own one.
The Deliverance
Although it has not achieved the popularity of Smile 2 or similar releases, the truth is that The Liberation is one of the most curious horror films of 2024. It’s true that its premise isn’t original, and it’s been seen a hundred million times before in other films: a family moving into a new house, and their young son starts behaving strangely.
Yes, the film is a clear adaptation of The Exorcist, but the human drama of the protagonist family and the great work of Glenn Close and Andra Day make it stand out above many other films with similar themes. If you like horror, the first hour is quite remarkable.
Anora
A peculiar comedy, with clear influences such as Cenicienta or Pretty Woman. Despite this, it is one of the most praised “indie” projects by specialized critics of all 2024.
To put it bluntly, some viewers consider that its footage (which is well over two hours) is excessive for this type of film. Even so, she is one of the winners of the year (although not one of the best known).
I Saw the TV Glow
Perhaps The Brightness of the TV is one of those films that some adore and others simply abhor, but there are already people who have wanted to see in Jane Schoenbrun a clear alternative to David Lynch himself.
Saving the distances, the truth is that it is one of the most disturbing films of the year and also one of the most original, with its particular mixture of horror and nostalgia. Critics love it, and users… well, it depends on who you ask.
Sometimes, the most well-known or blockbuster films don’t always have to be the best, or at least the riskiest. Especially today, when platforms such as Netflix or Amazon Prime Video have multiplied film production and also boosted variety. Something always to be thankful for, of course.
