Nintendo has kicked off 2025 with a series of moves aimed at strengthening its relationship with gamers beyond the console. In its most recent presentation, it announced two key initiatives: the launch of Nintendo Today , a daily news and content app, and the new Virtual Game Cards , a flexible way to share digital games between devices.

Both proposals showcase a more connected, practical, and community-focused vision. Let’s break them down.

Nintendo Switch Game Today: an app to make sure you don’t miss anything

Nintendo Today is now available on iOS and Android and functions as a kind of digital diary that delivers daily news, videos, comics, and updates on the brand’s most popular games and characters.

Think of it as your morning newspaper, but focused solely on the world of Nintendo. It not only informs you, it also entertains and keeps you up to date with what’s coming up, as if every morning you could flip through a personalized magazine featuring your favorite franchises: Mario, Zelda, Pokémon, Splatoon, and many more.

As Shigeru Miyamoto explained , the app was created as a complement to the popular Nintendo Direct , the virtual events where the company makes its big announcements. Following the Switch 2 Direct on April 2, Nintendo Today will begin publishing exclusive information and regular updates on the new console.

This way, fans will not only be able to watch the event but will also be able to follow the events from their mobile devices without having to keep an eye on social media or other external channels.

What’s included in Nintendo Today?

From day one, the app offers:

  • Daily news from selected franchises.
  • Official videos , previews, and interviews.
  • Digital comics starring classic characters.
  • Release and event calendar .
  • Possible future integration with surveys and user participation.

All of this within an accessible interface, ideal for casual users as well as for those who closely follow the company’s every move.

In a context where Nintendo is expanding its horizons to include movies, music, theme parks , and even its own museum, centralizing information was a necessity. The app not only facilitates access but also strengthens the emotional connection with its community.

Virtual Game Cards: Share digital games as if they were physical games.

But the app wasn’t the only major announcement. Nintendo also introduced a completely new system for managing and sharing digital games : Virtual Game Cards .

Until now, those who purchased a digital game for Nintendo Switch couldn’t easily share it with family or friends, unlike physical cartridges. This new feature bridges that gap.

How do virtual game cards work?

The idea is simple but powerful. When you buy a digital game, it now becomes a virtual card that you can “load” or “eject” from a special management screen on the console.

From there, you can

  • Load a virtual game card into your console to play normally.
  • Virtually eject it and load it on a second console (e.g., another Switch at home).
  • Temporarily share it with a family member via local connection.

This works for both the current Nintendo Switch and the upcoming Switch 2 and allows up to two consoles to access the same game without having to buy it twice.

Virtual Game Cards Share digital games as if they were physical games

Practical example: how to use it at home

Imagine you buy The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom digitally. You can:

  1. Load the virtual game card into your Switch and play.
  2. When you want to lend it to your child, you “eject” it and load it into their console.
  3. If they are on the same local network the first time, he will be able to play it on his device.
  4. You can even lend it to another member of your family for two weeks , and then it automatically returns to you.

It works as if you were lending a cartridge but without having to move anything physical.

Why is this important?

Because it addresses a long-mentioned need among users: flexibility. Sharing digital games was one of the main limitations of the Nintendo ecosystem. With this system, the company not only improves the user experience but also facilitates family gaming , sharing, and even rotating titles in households with multiple consoles.

And it does so without compromising security or license control, as everything is managed from within Nintendo’s own system.

Two steps towards a more connected Nintendo

With these announcements, Nintendo takes two significant leaps toward a value proposition more focused on the modern user:

  • On the one hand, Nintendo Today improves communication, access to content, and loyalty among its fans.
  • On the other hand, Virtual Game Cards make playing and sharing easier, especially in homes with multiple consoles.

Both initiatives feel like part of the same vision: to expand the Nintendo ecosystem beyond hardware, curating the experience of those who have grown up—or are growing up—with its games.

And while the launch of the Switch 2 will be the company’s big event of the year, these changes show that Nintendo is also working on the small, everyday details that make the relationship with its products more comfortable and fun.
