Microsoft’s fraud team has warned of an increase in scams in different services of the company, thanks to artificial intelligence. One of the affected tools has been the Quick Assistance app.
Although Windows Defender is one of the most successful security tools on the market, with a high percentage of reliability, it may not identify all alerts. In this case, Microsoft has warned in a statement about new risks to its operating system.
In just 1 year, between April 2024 and the same month of 2025, the company founded by Bill Gates has faced losses of 4,000 million dollars from this type of threat. And one of the latest affects an application pre-installed in Windows 11.
This is Quick Assist, a tool that attackers have taken advantage of to steal user information, camouflaging itself as a legitimate assistance service, thanks to the refinement of AI-powered fraud.
According to Microsoft, the incredible evolution of AI has made the dangers of attacks even greater, even reaching this type of legitimate app. As of today, the company has launched an alert, so it is best to always review the cybersecurity incidents shared by its fraud team.
Precisely, one of the most affected regions has been the European Union, specifically Germany, due to the presence in the country of an important e-commerce industry, another of the attackers’ targets.
“Fraudulent e-commerce websites can be set up in minutes using AI and other tools that require minimal technical knowledge,” Microsoft’s fraud team says. “
Previously, it would take days or weeks for actors to stand up on compelling websites. These fraudulent websites often mimic legitimate sites, making it difficult for consumers to identify them as fake.”
In addition to websites posing as legitimate, there are also other aspects, such as AI-powered chatbots that convince users that this service is not fraudulent, thanks to responses generated in natural language.
Another point of attack has been the labor market, since these AI tools have also improved fraudulent offers through interviews with this type of technology or fully automated emails.
“Job offers that include requests for payment, offers that seem too good to be true, unsolicited offers or interview requests over text messages, and the lack of formal communication platforms can be indicators of fraud,” Microsoft warns.
As for the Quick Assistance application, the company’s fraud team has added alert messages to prevent users from falling for this type of scam, blocking up to 4,415 suspicious attempts each day globally.
