Google wants everyone, especially minors, to use YouTube and Gemini responsibly. It has released new tools.
Yesterday a Google event called “Growing in the Digital Age 2026” was held in Malaga, focused on the protection of children and adolescents in the digital world and the educational value of YouTube.
Interesting healthy habit tools for YouTube and Gemini were presented here. Also a study was conducted by Public First on the use of YouTube as an educational tool.
According to this survey carried out among Spanish families with children between 11 and 17 years of age, 80% agree that YouTube videos created by educators are an effective and easily accessible learning resource.

Google’s digital wellbeing measures
The subjects most searched for by families on YouTube are Mathematics (55%), followed by Languages (34%) and History (34%).
In addition, 84% of parents say that their children find videos useful on their own, and 83% highlight the help of recommendations to discover valuable educational content.
YouTube can certainly be a good educational resource… as long as the right channels are chosen. It is essential for parents to check the educational channels their children watch to check that they are from an educator or teacher.
To create healthy habits among minors, YouTube has implemented a couple of new tools for parents. They can now limit or completely block Shorts videos on their children’s accounts. Short videos are distracting, and numerous studies do not recommend them. It seems that soon, we will be able to block them for adults as well.
Google has also simplified the management of family accounts so that parents waste less time and do not get involved.
Finally, YouTube has prepared a series of tips for parents. It advises normalizing talks about digital life, getting children used to watching content with parents, and agreeing on the rules with them. If they are negotiated, instead of imposed, they are more accepting of them.
Gemini Improves Child Protection
She also recommends making time for offline activities and face-to-face contact and teaching your children to use the platform with a purpose, whether it’s to solve a class question or delve into a passion. Not as a habit. It’s quality advice.
The rest of the measures are associated with Gemini AI to better respond if it detects possible crises.
Google has redesigned the “Help is available” module in Gemini. Now, when the AI detects a conversation that suggests a crisis, such as thoughts of self-harm, it will offer a one-click interface to call or chat with specialized helplines.
In addition, the AI’s responses will encourage help-seeking and will not support harmful speech. Another important measure is that Gemini will reject false beliefs, not support them, or twist them to generate a response that the user likes.
For child accounts, Gemini will not behave like a partner. Blocks have been added to prevent claims that they are human or possess human attributes. It will also prevent language that simulates intimacy or expresses needs. In addition, protection against encouraging harassment or other types of harassment has been added.
