According to sources, Meta would be working on developing a search engine based on artificial intelligence to reduce its dependence on Google and Microsoft.
Meta seems to be preparing a blow on the table when it comes to internet searches. According to a recent report by The Information, Mark Zuckerberg’s company is secretly developing a search engine powered by artificial intelligence.
The objective is to reduce its dependence on Google and Microsoft and, incidentally, to enter a terrain hitherto undisputed led by these two technological giants.
How would this search engine work? Imagine you’re using the Meta AI chatbot on Instagram or Facebook. Instead of turning to Google or Bing to answer your questions about whatever you want, the system would use its own database. This database, according to sources, has been simmering for about eight months by a dedicated Meta team.
But it doesn’t stop there, and it is known that the company is playing several of its cards up its sleeve. On the one hand, what has been said, but, on the other, Meta has been working on location data that could stand up to none other than Google Maps.
With Meta preparing its own AI search engine, Google should prepare for what’s coming.
The truth is that all this hype and news that are fluttering around Meta is not exactly something unique. Apple, for example, has also been working on search tools for its App Store, so it could be preparing its own AI-based Google Search replacement.
Meanwhile, on the competition front, OpenAI has confirmed that it is developing SearchGPT, its own AI-based search engine. And don’t forget Perplexity, which, although less well-known, is another AI search engine that is already in the legal crosshairs of large publishing groups such as News Corp. and The New York Times.
Seeing all this, you’re probably wondering if this is the beginning of the end of Google’s reign in online search. Of course, it is too early to say, but what is clear is that the situation worldwide is changing. AI is here to make a 180-degree turn for everyone, and giants like Meta don’t want to be left behind.
