WhatsApp scams are the order of the day, but the messaging app has a function that if you deactivate it, you will be protected from bank scams.
WhatsApp is the most widely used messaging app in the world, with more than 2,000 million users, and it is an indispensable tool to communicate with friends, family, and colleagues quickly and for free. However, this popularity also makes it a prime target for cybercriminals.
New scam tactics designed to take advantage of our trust appear every day. From suspicious links to seemingly harmless messages, the risks are closer than we imagine.
One of the main problems lies in a default function of WhatsApp that many users are unaware of and that makes it easier, unintentionally, to steal sensitive data.
The Hidden Danger of WhatsApp Automatic Downloads
WhatsApp has a feature that allows you to automatically download images, videos, and documents sent through the app. While this may seem handy, it also opens a door for malicious files to infiltrate your device.
These files, disguised as legitimate content, may contain viruses or software designed to steal personal and banking information.
For example, a scammer could send an image or document with hidden malware. If you have auto-download turned on, this file is saved directly to your phone without you having a chance to verify its authenticity. This small oversight can become the first step towards a banking scam or unauthorized access to your data.
But don’t worry, because disabling this feature is easier than it seems. You only need to modify a simple setting in WhatsApp to limit automatic downloads and thus have control over what you save on your device.
If you have an Android phone, open WhatsApp and go to Settings, then click on Storage and data. Under Automatic file download, turn off all options for both WiFi and mobile data.
For those with an iPhone, turning off this feature is very similar. Open the app, go to Settings, select Storage & Data, and set the Never option for all media file types.
This change ensures that no file is downloaded without your approval, allowing you to manually select and evaluate each one before storing it.
In a digital world where risks are the order of the day, having control over what goes into your device is a basic but powerful measure. Take these precautions and continue to enjoy the benefits of WhatsApp without worrying about scams.
