The situation with WhatsApp is going to change a lot. The EU wants the app to open up and allow others, such as Telegram and Signal, to communicate with it and its users.
It was already announced a few days ago. WhatsApp is going to implement a historic change in Europe that allows you to talk to users of other messaging applications without leaving the Meta app.
All this was born as a result of the now famous Digital Markets Act (DMA), which forces large platforms to be interoperable, that is, to let their users communicate freely with people who use different apps.
The way it works is very simple: soon, if you have WhatsApp on your mobile and you live in Europe, you will receive a notice to activate this function.
You can choose which external applications you want to connect from your WhatsApp account and decide if you want external chats to be mixed with your usual conversations or if you prefer to have them in a separate tray. For example, you can send and receive messages, images, videos, voice memos, and documents from WhatsApp to a contact using Signal, Birdy Chat, Haiket, or any other supported app.
WhatsApp will soon activate chats with third-party applications in Europe
Of course, it seems that, once it comes out, it will only work with personal conversations. This means that group chats between different platforms are not yet available, but they will be added no later than that.
And, on the other hand, not all WhatsApp functions, such as stickers or statuses, will work from the beginning with these external chats.
In terms of privacy, all messages are still end-to-end encrypted, meaning no one can read them at that moment when they’re sent back and forth. But each third-party app has its own privacy policy, so it’s a good idea to make sure you protect your data before using it.
A detail that may come as a surprise: if you blocked someone on WhatsApp, that person could continue to send you messages from another app. This is because the block does not automatically extend between platforms.
Telegram is expected to join this novelty soon
Finally, it should be added that Telegram is also working to join this absolute messaging network, but there is still no official date for it to happen. This is mainly due to how this app is created.
As you probably already know, Telegram is designed to be very flexible and has quite different functions, such as sending files up to 2 GB without compression, cloud synchronization with different devices, and support for large groups and channels with thousands of users.
To achieve this, it uses a cloud-based system, where messages are continuously stored and synced on its servers, which can cause problems if you take this step.

On the other hand, if you use WhatsApp, Messenger, Telegram or any other similar app to chat, you will also be interested to know that the European Union is debating a proposal called Chat Control 2.0 that could eliminate end-to-end encryption, which, in a simple way, is what guarantees that only the sender and receiver can read messages.
In short, neither you nor your contacts would have real privacy because the platforms would have to allow the authorities to access your conversations, photos, and other private data to detect abuse, especially child sexual content.
It should be noted that this initiative has been bringing problems for years with many comings and goings. It was presented in May 2022 to better protect minors from online crimes, but the controversy is enormous because it requires messaging apps to implement mandatory ‘backdoors’ so that everything can be monitored without the user noticing.
Although the proposal was rejected in 2023, with the rotation of the presidency of the Council of the EU, Denmark has put this situation back on the table.
